Iwobi Hails Okocha, Family for Rise to the Top
Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi is the toast of Nigerian fans after his virtuoso performance as the Eagles clobbered Argentina in an international friendly in Russia, Tuesday.
Iwobi scored two delightful goals as the Eagles came from behind to spank the two-time world champions 4-2 in the thrilling encounter.
As the plaudits continue to pour in for the 21-year-old, he’s said that it wasn’t always rosy for him, and that his uncle, former Super Eagles skipper Austin Jay Jay Okocha, played a big role in helping him find his feet.
According to the Hale End Academy graduate, there was a time he feared he was surplus to requirements at Arsenal before manager Arsene Wenger handed him his debut against Sheffield Wednesday on October 27, 2015.
“Growing up as a kid, there were times when I thought I was going to get released,” Iwobi said.
“But my mum and dad were always there to help. I have had some difficult times and, without my family and my uncle (Austin Okocha), I wouldn’t be where I am today.
“Considering the difficult path that I have had, my Arsenal career has been amazing. I’m on a good way. However, I’m still young and I have got a long way to go.”
Iwobi will be looking to help Arsenal get back to winning ways in the Premier League when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the first North London derby of the season on Saturday.
