The police in Imo State have rescued a Malaysia-based man, Collins Echezona, three days after he was kidnapped in his home town, Akokwa in Ideato North Local government of the state.
According to the Punch,
the police also killed the kidnap kingpin and arrested three members of the gang after a gun duel.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the state, Andrew Enwerem, told journalists that the kidnappers opened fire on the policemen who were searching for the victim and a gun duel ensued. According to him, the police killed one of the kidnappers and arrested three others with various gunshot wounds.
He said Echezona was rescued without injury and his SUV was also recovered from the kidnappers.
A family source told the newspaper that the kidnappers contacted Echezona’s father a day after he was abducted and demanded a ransom of N10 million.
She said the family could only raise N2m, but the kidnappers turned down the offer.
She disclosed that Echezona was rescued around 6pm on Tuesday at Ifeakala forest in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state where they dug a pit and blindfolded him all through the period they held him hostage.
She said one of the arrested kidnappers is an in-law to the victim.
