Paul Scholes Hails Wayne Rooney As He Becomes Club’s All-time Leading European Scorer

Wayne Rooney was jumping for joy last night as he became Manchester United’s top European hitman.

Roo’s classy chip put the Red Devils on the brink of the Europa League knockout stages.

Just 12 days after his boozy antics on England duty, he bagged his 39th goal in Europe before Juan Mata, an own goal and Jesse Lingard sank Feyenoord.

Old Trafford legend Paul Scholes hailed Rooney, saying: “Everybody inside this club knows how special he has been to score that amount of goals. It’s a fantastic achievement.”

Rooney’s 35th-minute goal was his 248th for the Old Trafford club — moving him one behind Sir Bobby Charlton in the race to become the club’s all-time leading scorer.

He also overtook Ruud van Nistelrooy as United’s top marksman in Europe.

A proud Rooney said: “It’s a great feeling to score goals for this club.

“I’m pleased and sure there’s plenty more to come from me.”

Asked if it was even sweeter after his difficult past week, he added: “It’s a shame I have to talk about it now after such a great victory.”
